In addition, most states have standards for on-the-job training and trade exams that are set by a state licensing board. Many states follow an apprentice-journeyman-master model, which can take some time to make your way through. Your state may have additional requirements, so researching what is expected in the state where you’ll be working is key. There are a handful of states that don’t require HVAC certification, but you’ll still want to check and make sure you’re compliant with all labor and trade organization standards. This process can take at least a few years to complete, so it’s a good idea to hire HVAC technicians who are already certified.
